Drinkle Building

Students have been pulling pranks at the University of Saskatchewan since classes began in 1909, when students dropped water balloons onto the heads of pedestrians from the roof of the Drinkle Building, the original downtown campus building. Since that time there have been many pranks, from ‘minor’ acts in the 1920s such as derailing cable cars to the appearance of a visiting Hollywood starlet on campus in 1954.

“Duke” Collins and George Bernard Shaw

With a platform calling for the disenfranchisement of all women on campus, Darrall “Duke” Collins seemed like a longshot to win the SRC presidency in the spring of 1948. That is, before he received the telegram. Signed G. B. S., the message from the famed Irish writer urged Collins not to give up the fight, further asserting that “you will never have a quiet world until you knock women out of politics.”

While many on campus were unconvinced, Time magazine was. It ran the story in its March 9 and 16 editions.
