From 1959 until 1962, Medicare was the predominant issue in Saskatchewan. Everybody had an opinion. No other issue divided the populous to the same extent. It was a journalist’s dream come true. Radio and television covered the story but it was in Saskatchewan’s print media where the debate reached the average person. The medicare debate occurred at a time when print still held sway over other media and almost every town had its own newspaper. When the doctors went on strike in July of 1962 the national and international press jointed the fray. Saskatchewan became the site of a media frenzy.
