Overview: (Action Program on Eating and Exercise)
Initially developed, under the leadership of ParticipACTION, in
1987. Continued to 1995
Target audience: elementary school children (grades
4-6) in Ontario. Subsequently adopted by other provinces (Saskatchewan,
Alberta)
Funded by Ontario Milk Marketing Board with support from Ontario
Government (Sport and Fitness Unit)
Content developed by Ontario Physical and Health Education Association
(OPHEA), ParticipACTION, plus health professionals and fitness experts
Classroom tested at each stage of development in cooperation with
the Toronto Board of Education.
OBJECTIVES
- To teach students how to analyze their personal daily food and
physical activity patterns in a non-competitive environment
- To enable students to set realistic goals for improving these
habits
- To have students take measures to implement those goals over
a short term period
RESOURCES
- Teachers Guide – includes 11 core lesson plans, auxiliary
lesson plans and teaching ideas, background information, and ideas
for integrating this information into other subject areas
- Student Journal – one for each student, in a fun-filled,
interactive and attractive magazine format for record-keeping,
record analysis, goal-setting and goal-recording, complete with
student-friendly information and instructions
- Student Pre- and Post-tests – to measure the effectiveness
of the program
- Classroom Poster – highlighting the importance of healthy
eating and regular activity
- Stickers – for teachers to “reward” students
for success
- Two Home Newsletters – the first to inform parents about
the program and gain their support; the second a reinforcement
and designed as a home fridge poster (a constant reminder)
IMPLEMENTATION
The aim was to make this program – set out in 30 minute segments
and designed to be taught over a 2 to 4 week period (depending on
the time available) – as simple as possible for the busy classroom
teacher to implement. All resources were supplied. “Just add
milk” and it will work!
