Ayer, a Chicago businessman, presented to The Newberry Library his collection of historical source material relating chiefly to the discovery, exploration and colonization of North America and to the native races of North America, the Hawaiian Islands and the Philipine Islands. It contains at present about 49,000 volumes, bound pamphlets, manuscripts, documents and other accessioned pieces."
