Historical noteLoyal Till Death: Indians and the North West Rebellion was co-authored with Professor Blair Stonechild, head of Indigenous Studies at the First Nations University of Canada. The book was praised for its sensitivity in telling the stories of Indians during this turbulent time. It won a 1997 Saskatchewan Book Award for First Peoples Publishing and was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for non-fiction.
Scope and contentThe file contains various documents compiled by Dr. Waiser during the research and writing of "Loyal Till Death:Indians and the Northwest Rebellion" (1997). These include: a list of correspondence from the National Archives (RG10 Volume 3582 File 949) discussing events in the Frog Lake-Battleford region during 1884-1885; a copy of an article entitled "The Last Hostage: Duncan McLean, 91, tells how Indians took Fort Pitt, Sask., in 1885, and held him a captive for 70 days" from Weekend Magazine No.32, 1968; a copy of correspondence from Jim Miller to Bill Waiser regarding a draft of Chapter Six of "Loyal till Death" with Dr. Miller's suggesting edits; a copy of a letter entitled "Aux Metis et a nos parents Indiens des environs du Fort Pitt et de la Riviere Bataille" (85/05/01) from the Collected Writings of Louis Riel, ed. Flanagan v.3; an excerpt from an unidentified correspondence from Fort Qu'Appelle to the Winnipeg Sun highlighting some of the events of the Frog Lake Massacre (April 12, 1885); a copy of a statement by W.J. McLean from the Hudson's Bay Company Archives regarding events witnessed at Fort Pitt in 1885; a copy of a statement by James Keith Simpson from the Hudson's Bay Company Archives regarding events witnessed at Frog Lake and Fort Pitt in 1885; a copy of a statement by Rev. Charles Quinney from the Hudson's Bay Company Archives regarding events witnessed at Fort Pitt in 1885; a copy of a statement by F.L. Simpson from the Hudson's Bay Company Archives regarding events witnessed at Fort Pitt in 1885; a copy of correspondence between Jim Miller and Dorothy Long regarding a CBC interview with Dr. Miller and the events experienced by the Mann family in 1885; a copy of an interlibrary loan request to the Alberta Legislature Library and an attached copy of an article entitled "My Own Story" by Isabelle Little Bear (grandaughter of Big Bear) from the Bonnyville Tribune; copy of an article from the National Archives (RG84 Vol. 1383 File HS-10-3-8 2) entitled "Big Bear's Prisoners" listing those held hostage after the Frog Lake Massacre; a copy of an article entitled "Recollections of the Frog Lake Massacre as told to A.E. Peterson" (source not given); two transcripts of an interview with Elder Fred Horse by Wilf Tootoosis (February 4, 1985) discussing life at Frog Lake in the past, one typed the other hand-written.
