Scope and contentFile contains a copy of Ens' paper sent to Barron who was the chair of a session at an upcoming Western Canadian Studies Conference. The session was called "Western Natives and Agricultural Development" and also had presentations from Sarah Carter and Robert Coutts (conference program also in file). En's argues that most of the previous historical record has focused on Metis politics and rebellions and not a lot the lifestyle that led to their landbase in Manitoba and the formation of the first western province. The Metis participated in wage labour, the fur trade and peasant agriculture to varying degrees, depending on the economic opportunities and the people in the settlement. As a rule they had limited commercial success on their small river side plots.
