Scope and contentA photocopy of Axtell's original typed manuscript of his essay "Some Thoughts on the Ethnohistory of Missions," published in After Columbus: Essays in the Ethnohistory of Colonial North America by James Axtell, New York: Oxford University Press, 1988, page 47 to 57. Another version of this same article appears in Ethnohistory 1982, 29 (1) page 35 to 41. The text of each article is slightly different. His article argues that lay historians tend to over-vilify missionaries and portray the Indians as passive acceptors of conversion. He feels it was more likely that the Indians actively accepted certain aspects of Christianity to answer "urgent social and religious questions..."
