Scope and contentFile contains a presentation by Elizabeth Palfrey of the Keewatin Regional Health Board. Palfrey introduces herself as a Southern Aboriginal woman who has relocated to the North. Palfrey's presentation is intended to give "a snapshot picture of the health status of Inuit residents of the Nunavut region of the NWT. We [KRHB] hope this picture will allow you to take a different point of view into thinking about Aboriginal people, their health status and how it touches all areas of concern." Palfrey discusses the demographic composition of the health region which comprises eight communities. She discusses the governmental structure behind health care, and the transportation system involved with delivering it. She also compares Northern Inuit communities to southern Reserve communities, underlining the interelation between economics and health. She discusses the interelation of health with education, housing, and social service issues. Also discussed are clean water and mental health issues, and the need for a culturally relevant approach to health care in the North. Following the presentation Palfrey takes the assembled Commissioners questions and discusses some of the issues raised with them.
