Historical noteLoyal Till Death: Indians and the North West Rebellion was co-authored with Professor Blair Stonechild, head of Indigenous Studies at the First Nations University of Canada. The book was praised for its sensitivity in telling the stories of Indians during this turbulent time. It won a 1997 Saskatchewan Book Award for First Peoples Publishing and was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for non-fiction.
Scope and contentThe file contains various documents compiled by Dr. Waiser during the research and writing of "Loyal Till Death:Indians and the Northwest Rebellion" (1997). These include: two copies of a Notice by Edgar Dewdney issued from Regina on May 6, 1885 from the National Archives (RG10 v.3584); various recipe cards with handwritten research notes on them (presumably by Dr. Waiser); a copy of an Agenda Paper from the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada entitled "Charles Trottier" by David Lee (1982) on the Exovedate member and Chief of the Prairie Ronde Metis community; a photocopy of a statement by Charles Trottier regarding his land at Prairie Ronde from the Saskatchewan Archives Board; a copy of a piece of correspondence between Bill Waiser and Jim Miller in which Dr. Miller gives his views on an early draft of Chapter Eight of "Loyal Till Death"; a copy of pgs 172-174 (with associated footnotes attached) from Patrick Elias' "The Dakota of the Canadian Northwest: Lessons for Survival" (1988); a copy of pgs 284 and 317 from "Telegrams of the North-West Campaign, 1885" ed. Desmond Morton; a copy of correspondence regarding the situation in what is now southeastern Saskatchewan during April of 1885 from the National Archives (RG10 Volume 3584, f.1130 pt. 1); a copy of an article from a publication called The Cosmos from October, 1903, (v.1 #10) entitled "The Surrender of Poundmaker, Chief of the Crees" by Major Charles F. Winter taken from the National Archives of Canada (RG84 Vol.1381 f.45-10-3-4 #2); a copy of a document entitled "Facts in Connection with the North West Rebellion, 1885, in Saskatchewan" by Edward W. Pilbeam as related to him by Mr. J.F. Clark of Clarkboro, Saskatchewan (Clark's Crossing) discussing some of the events of 1885 that occured at Clark's Crossing and the possibility of historical commemoration from the National Archives of Canada (RG84 Vol.1379 F.HS-10-3 #1); a copy of a letter from an Indian Agent at Fort Qu'Appelle (1885); a copy of an article entitled "Poundmaker's Surrender" by Stan Cuthand from an unidentified issue of Saskatchewan Indian; copy of a piece of correspondence (illegible) and a list fo several files from the National Archives Indian Affairs Black Series (RG10, Volume 3585); a copy of pg 188 from "Telegrams of the North-West Campaign, 1885" ed. Desmond Morton; handwritten research notes on lined paper discussing correspondence between Louis Riel and Chief Poundmaker in 1885 (presumably by Dr. Waiser); a copy of pgs 84-87 from the Collected Writings of Louis Riel ed.
