Scope and contentThis file contains three newspaper articles, a journal article, a copy of Bill C-47, the Government of Canada press release for Bill C-47, and Minister of Indian Affairs John C. Munro's speech/speech notes. Newspaper articles are: Defying Indian Act: Mohawk reserve reinstates benefits for families of women in mixed marriages by Linda Hossie, The Globe and Mail, Sat., December 15, 1984; PC optimistic he can improve Indian Act by Nicole Baer, Winnipeg Free Press, Thursday November 8, 1984; Alberta Indian Chiefs challenge reinstatement plan by Linda Goyette, The Edmonton Journal, Friday, June 1, 1984. The press release and speech outline the changes in the act and how the Government was selling their position to the public. Article: Indian status: A Women's Issue or an Indian Issue, by Professor Doug Sanders (UBC Law). This article, taken from the Canadian Native Law Reporter (CNLR)-1984, outlines the history behind this bill, and how it died in the Senate and failed to become law before the next general election. It also highlights the debate re: women's rights versus First Nation's rights. This an excellent resource on the history of the eventual changes in the Indian act that occurred in 1985.
