Scope and content | This file contains report published by TASO (Research Program for Technology Assessment in Subarctic Ontario, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON)titled "'I Was Never Idle': Women and Work in Moosonee and Moose Factory," It is comprehensive study of working women in Northern Ontario communities, both past and in 1985. Field work and interviews add an interesting dimension to the report. For example the younger the age group, the less Cree speakers in that group. There are transcripts of interviews with women talking about incredible hardships they endured in the early to mid 20th century. The Indian Agent would force them to leave and move to the bush to become "self-sufficient." If they did not leave he threatened to take their kids away. It has a good bibliography, lists of local institutions, work activities, community activities etc. Excellent snapshot of life in Moose Factory at this time. There is also a list of other reports conducted by TASO, and their mission statement. | |
