Historical noteAfter 1810 the rivalry between the North West Company and Hudson's Bay Company grew in intensity and became a problem for the British government. The conflict over the Red River Settlement led to virtual warfare between the companies, and the final solution was the union of the two companies in 1821. The name of the older company remained.
Scope and contentCopies of transcripts pertaining to the expiry of the Agreement by which the North West Company was constituted. Secret negotiations between the two companies commenced with George Moffat of Montreal, representing the Northwester Wintering Partners, approaching Lady Selkirk through her friend Samuel Gale, Jr., to ascertain whether or not the Hudson's Bay Company would become the Northwester's agent, supplying their outfits and selling their furs. Andrew Coleville, Lady Selkirk's brother and a member of the Committee of the Hudson's Bay Company, replied for her, proposing a real union of the two companies.
