Stevens, respresenting the government of the Northwest Territories, discusses initiatives that his government has taken with regard to Aboriginal people and the justice system. These include "dealing with the offender in a more holistic approach," "emphasizing treatment, counselling, resittution and compensation rather than punishment," "involving the community in developign any plan on how to deal with the offender," "Allowing the community to suggest the resources that are required to deal with the offender," "allwoing the community to follow through with the administration of the sentence to the offender," and "facilitate[ing] the development of a justice system for communities that makes sense to those communities." Stevens also discusses the employment of Aboriginal professionals in the NWT justice system, including elders, statistical data, and other information. | |
