Historical noteLoyal Till Death: Indians and the North West Rebellion was co-authored with Professor Blair Stonechild, head of Indigenous Studies at the First Nations University of Canada. The book was praised for its sensitivity in telling the stories of Indians during this turbulent time. It won a 1997 Saskatchewan Book Award for First Peoples Publishing and was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for non-fiction.
Scope and contentThe file contains various documents compiled by Dr. Waiser during the research and writing of "Loyal Till Death:Indians and the Northwest Rebellion" (1997). These include: a copy of a letter descibring conditions in the South Branch settlements in 1886 from the National Archives (RG10 v.3585 G 1130 p.8); a copy of correspondence from NWMP officials to the Department of Indian Affairs regarding the giving of gifts to on-reserve Indians by police and difficulties arising from it (1886) from the National Archives (RG18 n790); a copy of correspondence with the handwritten descriptor added "Correspondence re: Indians at Onion Lake in 1903 wishing to return to their old reserve from which they were forced off after 1885 Rebellion" from the National Archives (RG10 Vol.3710 f.19, 550-4); a copy of a translation of a letter from Father L. Legoff protesting the denial of Treaty payments to the "montagnais of lac froid" (likely Woods Cree) in 1889 from the National Archives (MG29 E106 Volume 18 File Treaty payment to ?); copies of a series of papers from the United States Department of the Interior including a family tree and testimony compiled for the enrollement of several Assiniboine people at the Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana; a copy of correspondence regarding people from Thunderchild, Little Pine, Poundmaker, and Sweet Grass reserves that are missing, from Hayter Reed to Edgar Dewdney (1886?); a typed booklet with research notes on a variety of sources dealing with the prosecution of Treaty Indians following the uprising of 1885; a copy of a letter to Sir John A. Macdonald discussing the 1885 hangings in Battleford (authorship uncertain: Dewdney?) December 20, 1885; handwritten research notes on recipe cards (presumably by Dr. Waiser); a torn page from an unidentified manuscript discussing the British government's response to the sentencing of Louis Riel to death; a copy of a piece of correspondence marked "reply from Ottawa to Dewdney on Treatement of Indian and Metis after 85 Rebellion" October 28, 1885 from the National Archives (RG10 Vol.3710 f.19, 550-3); copies of three pieces of correspondence from the National Archives dealing with Indians involvement with the events of 1885 between government officials (RG10 vol.3584 f.1130, pt.1B, RG10 vol.3584 f.1130); a copy of a letter from Sir John A. Macdonald to Edgar Dewdney suggesting that Chief Crowfoot and the Blackfoot be rewarded for their loyalty in 1885 and the latter sent to England (Oct 26, 1885); a research copy of correspondence from the Sir John A. Macdonald Papers Volume 174 from the Saskatchewan Archives Board.
