Scope and contentFile contains a photocopy of part two of Berkhofer's book: The White Man's Indian: Images of the American Indian from Columbus to the Present , New York: Vintage Books, 1979, page 35 to 111. Several copies are available at the U of S library. This chapter outlines the scientific image of the Indian as defined by anthropology. This includes how Indians came to be in the western hemisphere, their cultural attributes, how "changable" attributes were, and their ranking among other societies; all as defined by white men. He argues that the "white-thinkers" mostly used the evidence to back up old theories, not create new ones.
