| Historical note | Loyal Till Death: Indians and the North West Rebellion was co-authored with Professor Blair Stonechild, head of Indigenous Studies at the First Nations University of Canada. The book was praised for its sensitivity in telling the stories of Indians during this turbulent time. It won a 1997 Saskatchewan Book Award for First Peoples Publishing and was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for non-fiction. | |
| Scope and content | The file contains various documents compiled by Dr. Waiser during the research and writing of "Loyal Till Death:Indians and the Northwest Rebellion" (1997). These include: a 19 page booklet of photocopied research notes (presumably by Dr. Waiser) on events in the Battleford area in 1885 and numerous sources consulted; research notes on recipe cards (presumably by Dr. Waiser) from various secondary sources related to events in the Battelford area in 1885; a copy of correspondence (an email?) between Jim Miller and Bill Waiser regarding a draft of Chapter Five of "Loyal Till Death" with Dr. Miller's suggestions for revision stated; a 33 page publication entitled Research Bulletin No. 117 "The North-West Mounted Police, in 1874-1889: A Statistical Study" by Dr. Waiser for Parks Canada (1979); a copy of a statement by William McKay on events in the Battleford area during 1885 from the Hudson's Bay Company Archives; a page from a draft of "Loyal Till Death" with lines highlighted discussing Indian Agent John Rae's meeting with Big Bear in 1883 (pg. 60 of the draft); a copy of Canada Sessional Papers No. 4, 1880, discussing the "unneccessaring nervousness" of the inhabitants of Battleford; a copy of a private and confidential letter to Edgar Dewdney discussing Farm Instructors (1885); an excerpt from Grant MacEwan's book "Fifty Mighty Men" discussing "The Pioneer Publisher" Patrick Gammie Laurie of the Saskatchewan Herald (1975); Copies of "translations of rebel documents" from the National Archives (RG13 Justice B2); a copy of a memo from an illegible sender announcing that "the Indians have left their reserves and are concentrating on 'Poundmakers"" (1885); a copy of a telegraph announcing "Battleford ravaged" by one W.P.
