Historical noteÉmile Petitot (1838-1917) was a French Oblate missionary who came to northwestern Canada in 1862. In addition to serving missions along the Mackenzie River and Great Slave Lake, he undertook expeditions to the Yukon and along the Athabasca River. He published several works on geography, anthropology and Aboriginal languages.
Scope and contentThis book describes Petitot's explorations of the Mackenzie and Anderson Rivers and the western branch of the Yukon River. It also provides an account of Petitot's travels to the various forts such as Fort MacPerson and his encounters with protestant missionaries who tried to dissuade him from preaching in their territory.
