Historical noteLoyal Till Death: Indians and the North West Rebellion was co-authored with Professor Blair Stonechild, head of Indigenous Studies at the First Nations University of Canada. The book was praised for its sensitivity in telling the stories of Indians during this turbulent time. It won a 1997 Saskatchewan Book Award for First Peoples Publishing and was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for non-fiction.
Scope and contentThe file contains various documents compiled by Dr. Waiser during the research and writing of "Loyal Till Death:Indians and the Northwest Rebellion" (1997). These include: numerous copies of correspondence from Father Grandin at the Bear's Hill Reserve (1885) from the Provincial Archives of Alberta (Accession No.84.400|722); 2 copies of correspondence realted to events in 1885 (sender and origin unknown); a copy of an article entitled "The Rebellion at Lac La Biche" by Evelyn Rowand from the Alberta Historical Review; a copy of an interview transcript entitled "1885 Resistance Project: Oral History on Loon Lake" with Alex Stick transcribed by Tyrone Tootoosis; a typed translation of a letter from one Delorme to Beau-Frere (source not not given April 18, 1885); copies of correspondence to Dr. Waiser from David Lee and Diane Payment with attached genealogical information on the Trottier and Jobin families; two typed pages with handwritten edits from an early draft of "Loyal Till Death" (pgs 263, 269); a copy of a map detailing the buildings at Onion Lake (1885?) origin uncertain; a copy of correspondence from the Hudson's Bay Company Archives discussing the location and dimension of buildings at Fort Pitt in 1885; a copy of an article from the Alberta Historical Review (v.33 #4) entitled "Medicine Hat and the Rebellion" by William Cousins; a copy of correspondence between Jim Miller and Bill Waiser in which Dr. Miller suggests edits to an early draft of "Loyal Till Death"; a copy of an article from the Alberta Historical Review (v.33 #2) entitled "Calgary and the Rebellion" edited by Hugh A. Dempsey; a copy of a transcript of the Edmonton Bulletin detailing events of 1885 from the Provincial Archives of Alberta (Accession No.84.400|740); a copy of a page from an unidentified book discussing Loon Lake in 1885; an article entitled "Solomon Pritchard, Survivor of Battle of Frenchman's Butte Re-visits the Site" with a map attached of the battlefield from the National Archives of Canada (RG84 v.1383 f.HS-10-3-9-1); a copy of correspondence between S.B. Lucas and Edgar Dewdney (April 1885) from the National Archives of Canada (RG10 v.3709 f.550-2); a copy of an article entitled "Transition to Settlement The Peace Hills Indian Agency 1884-1890" by Brian Tilley of the Univeristy of Lethbridge from the compilation Canadian Papers in Rural History Volume VIII ed. Donald H. Akenson (1992); a statement on events at Battle River Crossing in 1885 by Thomas Taylor from the Hudson's Bay Company Archives; a copy of Chapter Fifteen of Peter Erasmus' "Buffalo Days and Nights" entitled "Rebellion"; a piece of correspondence (April 1889) by Father Legoff regarding the "good conduct of my Montagnais" (likely Woods Cree) during the events of 1885 from the National Archives of Canada (MG29 E106 v.18 f. Treaty payment); a piece of correspondence from 1885 discussing pillaging by troops by J. Macrae; a piece of correspondence discussing Indian Affairs from Hayter Read to Edgar Dewdney (June 1885).
