Historical note | Loyal Till Death: Indians and the North West Rebellion was co-authored with Professor Blair Stonechild, head of Indigenous Studies at the First Nations University of Canada. The book was praised for its sensitivity in telling the stories of Indians during this turbulent time. It won a 1997 Saskatchewan Book Award for First Peoples Publishing and was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for non-fiction. | |
Scope and content | The file contains various documents compiled by Dr. Waiser during the research and writing of "Loyal Till Death:Indians and the Northwest Rebellion" (1997). These include: a copy of a document from the National Archives (C-10,124 RG10 vol.3710, f.19,550-3) by Indian Affairs with notes on the various bands and whether they were loyal or disloyal to the government in 1885; a copy of a letter from Hayter Reed to the Indian Commissioner (July 29, 1885) suggesting policy; typed transcript of an unsourced document entitled "The Crossing of the Big Muskeg of Loon Lake, Saskatchewan - 1885" no author given; a copy of the publication "Saskatchewan Indians and the Resistance of 1885: Two Case Studies" by Blair Stonechild (1986); a copy of an article from Canadian Cattlemen entitled "Lucky Man's Flight" by W. Henry McKay of Brooks, Alberta (December 1948); copies of various legal papers (National Archives?) including Orders in Council and assorted court documents related to the trial and execution of eight Indian men at Battleford in 1885. | |
