Scope and contentFile contains a photocopy of Jacqueline Gresko's article "White 'Rites' and Indian 'Rites': Indian Education and Native Responses to the West, 1870-1910." Found in Western Canada: Past and Present / [Western Canadian Studies Conference]; edited by Anthony W. Rasporich Calgary: University of Calgary : McClelland and Stewart West, c1975. Despite earnest efforts to assimilate Native children in Industrial schools, their families and elders kept their traditional sports, dances and ceremonies alive. Christian education programs actually encouraged Native involvement in their own traditions, a "stimulated resistance" to assimilation efforts.
