| Historical note | Loyal Till Death: Indians and the North West Rebellion was co-authored with Professor Blair Stonechild, head of Indigenous Studies at the First Nations University of Canada. The book was praised for its sensitivity in telling the stories of Indians during this turbulent time. It won a 1997 Saskatchewan Book Award for First Peoples Publishing and was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for non-fiction. | |
| Scope and content | The file contains various documents compiled by Dr. Waiser during the research and writing of "Loyal Till Death:Indians and the Northwest Rebellion" (1997). These include: a copy of letter from James Anderson at the Blackfoot Agency, Montana Territory (1885); two copies of an article entitled "The Executions. History of the Murders. The Closing Scenes." from the November 30, 1885 eidtion of the Saskatchewan Herald; a copy of Table 6 (presumably from "Loyal Till Death") entiteld "Populations of Indian Bands Accused of Disloyalty"; a copy of a table entitled "Numbers of rebels that Treaty money witheld from 1887" (RG10?); a copy of Kapeyakwaskonam's (One Arrow) entry from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography by Kenneth J. Tyler; a copy of pgs 311, 494-495 of Olive Patricia Dickason's "Canada's First Nations"; copies of a series of papers from the United States Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs in response to a request by Dr. Waiser; a copy of a proclamation from the government of Canada granting a general amnesty for those involved in the 1885 uprising (1896) from the National Archives of Canada (C-10, 124 RG10, vol.3710, f.19.550-4); summary notes correspondence in the National Archives(?) related to Cree refugees in Montana post-1885; a copy of Department of Indian Affairs correspondence from Lawrence Vankoughnet to John A. Macdonald; a photocopy of a list of refugees at Fort Assiniboine, Montana including Gabriel Dumont; a copy of correspondence related to the Battlefored agency (August 1885) from the National Archives (RG10 Vol.3584, f.1130 pt.1A); a copy of an article from the Saskatoon Star Phoenix April 28, 1995 by Doug Cuthand entitled "Pardon for Poundmaker, Big Bear trivializes issue"; a copy of a piece of correspondence from Hayter Reed to Edgar Dewdney discussing the health of One Arrow (April 17, 1884); notes from Le Manitoba, April 22, 1886. Vol. XV, Number 27 and the St. Boniface Parish Records discussing the illness and death of Chief One Arrow; a copy of correspondence from Sir John A.
