Scope and content | William Wardill is an archaeologist and historian from the Red Deer Forks area of Western Canada. Here at the juncture of the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan Rivers, in what is today the RM of Chesterfield, three fur trading posts (by the name Chesterfield House), the confluence of a north-south trail, and a Metis settlement existed. Wardill relates the tale of his archaeological work at the site, and the documentary history of the area. Included are topics such as HBC, NW and XY Company Rivalry, Iroquois employment with the NWC, attacks by the Gros Ventre (Atsina) on the posts and their employees in the early nineteenth century, the threat of Crow and Missouri attack, Peter Fidler's work in the area, Big Bear's band wintering at the site, the coming of the North West Mounted Police, and the story of the Metis settlement of Riviere la Biche and its dissolution. | |
