Scope and content | File contains a presentation by Violet Monday, Wife of the Chief Councillor of the Ucluelet First Nation for Health Affairs. Monday reads a presentation compiled by the First Nations' family care worker and health worker for the Commission. Monday discusses the direct control that the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council has over some health services, the result of which has been the airing of a wide variety of serious issues including child abuse, suicide, family violence, fetal alcohol syndrome, alcohol and drug abuse, an inadequate justice system, family breakdown, abuse in residential school, self-esteem issues, and other mental health concerns. Monday explains the importance of traditional legal practices such as trial by the longhouse, and the negative impact of cultural suppression on her people. Monday stresses how they would like the approach to health to change from transitional to a holistic approach grounded in traditional cultural values. She then explains the various aspects of such an approach including but not limited to the health, educational, and justice fields. Following the presentation is a discussion between Monday and Commissioner George Erasmus on some of the issues raised. | |
