Historical note | Thomas McKay was a prominent "Countryborn," or English Metis, citizen of Prince Albert. Thomas was that community's first mayor (1886) and played an important role in the events of the Northwest Uprising of 1885. | |
Scope and content | File contains numerous articles relating to the death and recognition of Thomas McKay, and his wife Catherine McKay (nee McBeth). Included is a two and half page unattributed biography of Mr. McKay, an article from the Saskatoon Star Phoenix of Friday, September 26, 1924 entitled "Grim Reaper Takes Pioneer of North: "Tom" McKay Found Dead in Democrat Just Outside City: Whole District Thrown Into Mourning When First Mayor of Prince Albert Passes Away; Funeral Held Sunday," a Prince Albert Daily Herald article entitled "Funeral Late Thomas McKay Takes Place on Sunday Afternoon Royal [Royal is an Anglican Church south of the city]: Many Tributes Paid Memory of Grand Old Man of the North - A Kindly and Genial Soul Has Passed on - Country Poorer for His Death is General Comment," an article entitled "Mrs. Thomas McKay, Wife of Historic Figure, Is Dead [unattributed, probably Herald], a copy of an article entitled "1000 Persons Pay Their Last Respects At McKay Funeral: 'The whole of This Western Country a Memorial to Him,' Declares Rev. P.C. Hackworth, Speaking at Service," (Star Phoenix), a copy of an article entitled "Thomas McKay Played Heroic Rebellion Role [Daily Herald?]," an article from the Regina Leader Post from November 195? entitled "The colorful McKay clan" by J.R. Bothwell, Some handwritten biographical notes on William McKay and Thomas McKay, a Prince Albert Daily Herald article entitled: "Man Who Fired First Shot in 1885 Rebellion Dies in Local Hospital" (Dec. 3, 1938) regarding the death of "Gentleman" Joe McKay, and some typed reproductions of the articles listed. | |
