Historical note | Andre Renaud was born in Montreal on 25 January 1919 and was ordained an Oblate priest in 1944. He served throughout the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Later, he earned his Masters and PhD from the University of Ottawa. Between 1954 and 1963, Renaud established the Indian Social Development Bureau for the Coordination of Educational Research, the Indian and Eskimo Association of Canada, and the Society for Indian and Northern Education. He taught at the University of Saskatchewan from 1961 to 1974 and during that time created the Indian and Northern Education Program. Renaud was a tireless promoter of cultural education around the globe and was awarded the Canadian Centennial Medal for achievement in Native education. He was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1973. André Renaud died on 15 January 1988. | |
Scope and content | This article is a collection of Father Renaud's observations relating to "the possible insertion of Indian populations within the fabric of the nation" [Canada]. He sees aboriginals as both an ethnic group in Canada, and an ethnic minority as well. | |
