Scope and contentThis file contains a 1939 document titled An Account of the History of the Indian Tribes during the 80s by A.E. Porter, M.D. of Edmonton, Alberta. From preface: “ The following account of what was perhaps the most important event in the history of Indians in the North American Continent, was gained during the early life of the writer in the “70’s” while practising as the only independent physician west of the Manitoba Boundary line.” Porter tells the story of Okimasis, son of Matakansas, who travelled to Mexico and was involved in a bloody battle with traders. Okimasis later returned to Canada and died near Nipawin. Also included is an [1978] Indian Viewpoint column by Doug Cuthand relating to treaty rights published in the Prince Albert Daily Herald, and a 1978 article about the beadwork skills of Betty Clyke, a Saulteaux woman from White Bear First Nation in Saskatchewan who learned the art of bead work as a young girl.
