Letter to Dr. Murray from Dr. G. Bateman, Dublin, Ireland, announcing the death of Reginald J.G. Bateman, Professor of English, who was was killed in action in France on 3 September 1918. Dr. Bateman advised Dr. Murray, Reginald's father, that he wished to "present a football perpetual challenge cup to the University to be called the "Reginald Bateman" cup to be allocated as you and the Football Committee may decide." Bateman noted that he also wanted "to place a brass tablet to the memory of my gallant son." Bateman closed with the news that "my fourth son, Captain A.C. Bateman M.C. has been missing since 28th March 1918." |
