Curator's note | Asphalt or bitumen is a black viscous liquid or semisolid that is present in most crude petroleum deposits. Since the 1870s it has been used in road construction as a binder or 'glue' for such solid products as sand, gravel and stone. Due to its viscosity it must be heated to a high temperature before use. |
