Curator's note | Estevan is surrounded by deposits of lignite coal on three sides. These deposits were known and exploited from the earliest days of European settlement. Coal was in great demand for fuel in southeastern Saskatchewan which was virtually treeless. Many small mines were opened in those early days. The work was hard, dirty and dangerous as cave-ins were common. |
