1977: Exchange program established with State University of Chernivtsi, Ukraine
An exchange program with the
State University of Chernivtsi in the Ukraine was announced in November
1977. Twenty-five years later, it was
being billed as “one of the oldest international initiatives of the University
of Saskatchewan.”1 The
program was to include annual exchanges of faculty for periods of six months,
and of students during the summer months.
Plans also included joint participation in scientific conferences, the
exchange of scientific literature, and common research projects. The promotion of cultural contacts was to be
achieved through the exchange of exhibitions, films, slides and recorded
concerts “and through the establishment of links between the university
libraries.”2 The initial
five-year agreement was subsequently renewed several times and the program was
administered by the College of Arts and Science. In 1993 the exchange program was transferred to U of S
International; it now focuses on “providing joint learning environments to the
students from the SUC and U of S in pursuing courses dealing with the process
of political reform in central and eastern Europe.”3
