The War Effort:

The Pool attempted to rally support for the war effort, and for its own contribution to the allied forces.

“After good Canadian flour reaches Great Britain it goes to the bakers where it is made into bread and buns and biscuits. (…) It finds its way into the lunch pails of little children who are studying their lessons just as Canadian children are studying theirs. Some of it goes into the lunch pails of those who work in factories, or for a late snack for the air-raid precaution worker, who watches late into the night lest enemy planes should swoop low over the landscape and lay waste to cities and towns...

Victory Loan Bond, 1943. 227

“Canadian wheat follows our Canadian troops, whether they are fighting in Africa, Sicily, Italy or Germany, and when the war is over, there will be a big demand for Canadian wheat to help the starving millions of peoples whose homes have been laid waste and whose fields have been ravaged.

“Canadian wheat is the best in the world, and it has a big role to play when peace is restored.” [Excerpt from SCWP Ltd publication, “The Story of Canadian Wheat,” 1943.]

Pool committees were asked to convince people to vote for conscription in the 1942 plebiscite, elevator agents bought 27,000 tons of scrap metal for the government, and fieldmen showed National Film Board movies to help Victory Loan campaigns. [G. Fairbairn, 1984, 150.]

The Pool also attempted to help returning war veterans adjust to life on the farm.

“During the war years the SWP organization was wholeheartedly in support of the work of the Canadian Legion. More recently a small committee of the Wheat Pool Board has been working in close co-operation with the Canadian Legion in an effort to anticipate some of the problems of the difficult period of readjustment likely to face veterans who are entering agriculture as their life’s work. (…) May we express to the Veterans of SK our sincere appreciation of their efforts and our best wishes for success in their new venture.” [SWP publication, “Veterans: Your Land Act Settlement Plans,” 1947.]
