Crags and Dunes

The typical view of Saskatchewan - that it consists solely of unrelentingly flat plains - could not be further from the truth. The highest elevation in Saskatchewan is 1,392 metres, in the southwest corner of the province at Cypress Hills; the lowest point, a mere 213 metres, is in the northern shield, at Lake Athabasca.

Quarries, Crags and Cliffs

"Above, a bleached-denim sky and flying cloud. Below, the valley bottom, the quilt of crop and summerfallow darkening and lightening with shadow and sun as the clouds streamed overhead, the turtle-backed sandbars sunning themselves in the slow pulse of a drought-starved river. Across the way, the tops of the poplars shivered in unison as the road switched back and forth like a cat’s tail up the sides of the opposing hills."

~ Guy Vanderhaeghe, Homesick

Sand Dunes

"This antelope haven of ridges and meadows, knolls and hollows, is the rangeland. It is distinguished by white clay hills filled with glacial moraine deposits in the coulees and hollows and on the small plateaus. Between the slopes and through the gullies flow some very pretty little streams, some too small to be of interest to anglers, other just deep and wide enough to make you want to slow down and do some serious water gazing. Nowhere else on the Canadian prairie can you ogle such streams."

~ David Carpenter, Courting Saskatchewan
