Royal Visits
Regina has always had strong ties to the British Monarchy.
The name Regina was suggested in 1882 by the wife of the Governor General,
Princess Louise, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria . She suggested
the name to honour her mother. Many of Regina 's streets, including Albert
Street , Victoria Avenue and Prince of Wales Drive, honour members of
the Royal Family. Even the local hockey team, the Pats, has a royal connection - they
were named in dual honour of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry,
the local regiment that fought so nobly in World War I, and Princess
Patricia herself (who was also the inspiration for the name of the regiment).
The first Royal visit to Regina took place in August 1882 when Princess
Louise and the Marquess of Lorne came through on the first passenger
train to the settlement. In all, Regina has been visited 24 times by
various members of the Royal Family. In 1906 Prince Arthur and the Duke
of Connaught visited Regina and placed the cornerstone for Regina 's
new city hall. Edward, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) visited
in 1919 and again in 1927. In 1939, King George VI (father of the current
Queen Elizabeth II) and Queen Elizabeth (commonly referred to as the
Queen Mum) visited Regina as part of their much-celebrated tour of Canada
. Queen Elizabeth II has also visited the Queen City with her husband
Prince Philip; their first visit was in 1959, with subsequent visits
in 1973, 1978, 1985 and 1987.
