Historical Note: Regina’s town founders had
a similar problem with Wascana Park that they had with Victoria Park:
the real estate that the park sat on was a valuable commodity, and
it was very tempting to take offers on the land. City council came
under fire in 1912 when they allowed the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway
to purchase parkland at the corner of 16th Avenue and Albert Street.
They had already allowed the GTP to build spur tracks and a station
in the heart of a residential area in 1910. Many members of the public
and the media objected to the sale, but not because green space was
being used for development. They objected because they felt that the
decision should have been put to a vote! The GTP intended to use the
land to build a large railroad hotel, the Chateau Qu’Appelle. |
