John G. Diefenbaker fonds. -- 1815-1979 (inclusive); 1940-1979 (predominant). -- 593.2 m of textual records and other material.

Historical note

John George Diefenbaker was born in Neustadt, Ontario, 18 September 1895 and moved West with his family in 1903, settling in the Northwest Territories' Fort Carleton (what would become part of Saskatchewan with the creation of that province in 1905). Educated in one-room country schools, taught by his father and uncle, at the Saskatoon Collegiate Institute, Diefenbaker earned three degrees from the University of Saskatchewan. After service in the First World War, Diefenbaker opened a law practice. Determined to enter politics, Diefenbaker failed to win his seat in the general elections of 1925 and 1926, was defeated in the provincial elections of 1929 and 1938; and lost the mayoral election in Prince Albert in 1935. Finally elected to the House of Commons for the constituency of Lake Centre in 1940, he never failed thereafter to win re-election. Diefenbaker failed twice in his bid to become leader of the national Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, in 1942 and 1948. In 1953, Diefenbaker ran successfully in the Prince Albert riding, and in 1956 was elected leader of the Progressive Conservative Party. In 1957, the Conservative Party under his leadership scored an electoral upset, ending 22 years of Liberal rule. His second electoral triumph, in 1958, was the largest ever accorded any political leader in Canada's history. The Diefenbaker government was responsible for introducing much of the progressive legislation we now take for granted; established various agricultural reforms, secured massive wheat sales to China, introduced concepts such as the "Northern Vision" and passed the Canadian Bill of Rights. Devaluation of the dollar and a nuclear arms issue helped reduce the Diefenbaker to a minority in 1962 and loss of government in 1963. Diefenbaker failed to lead the Conservatives back into power in the 1965 election, and in 1967 was defeated as national leader of the party. He remained a sitting member of parliament until his death on 16 August 1979.
