Russ Yuristy was born in Goodeve, Saskatchewan, in 1936. He received a Bachelor of Liberal Arts from the U of S (1959), a Masters from the University of Wisconsin, majoring in painting and minoring in graphics. He was hired by the University of Saskatchewan in Regina to teach drawing and painting (1967-71) and to administer the renowned Emma Lake workshops (1968-70).

In 1971 he became the Project Leader of a Creative Playground Workshop. His large animal playground sculptures have been erected in Spokane, Washington, and many Canadian cities: Churchill, Ottawa, Regina, Swift Current, Saskatoon, and in Vancouver for Expo '86.

Yuristy moved to Ottawa in 1986 to teach at the University of Ottawa and the Ontario College of Art and then to Montreal in 1990. His works have been shown internationally from the World's Fair in Spokane, Washington, to the National Capital Commission Development of Victoria Island in Ottawa.
