1958: New School of Physical Education
Until 1958 students wishing to receive special training in physical
education had to leave the province. Although the University of Saskatchewan
had a long history of physical training and recreational sports, the current
needs and demands of the students were exceeding the capacity of the existing
system. Classes were originally
designed to prepare students as instructors for elementary and secondary
schools and as early as 1940 all freshmen students were required to enroll in a
one-year physical activities class. In 1950 a Department of Physical Education
was established to carry on a service program for all students and to provide
for physical education classes as electives in the Colleges of Arts and Science
and Education. 1
Twenty-nine students enrolled in the new School of Physical Education
for the 1957/58 academic year, the course was to be four years in duration and
leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education, B.A. (P.E.).2 The Director was Dr. W.A.R. Orban whose previous post was
Civilian Consultant to Airforce Headquarters on Physical Education and is
perhaps best remembered for his development of the 5BX and 10BX exercise
programs. The school was to remain part
of the College of Arts and Sciences until 1972 when it obtained College status. In 1998 the College was renamed the College
of Kinesiology, offering a Bachelor of
Science in Kinesiology [B.Sc.(Kin.)].
