Mobilize: Community-based Initiatives
The ParticipACTION Saskatoon pilot project proved to not only be
valuable in demonstrating the potential of the ParticipACTION strategy
and the public’s response to it, it also clearly demonstrated
the importance of community-wide initiatives to encourage and support
individual action.
As a result, ParticipACTION’s overall strategy became to
“operate and promote nationally, but implement locally.”
Supporting and enhancing the efforts of local programs and leaders
(“Educate”) was reinforced by creating opportunities
for a whole community to mobilize around a physical activity initiative.
ParticipACTION’s success and subsequent skills in mobilizing
whole communities – all based upon the Saskatoon experience
– lead to many innovative and high profile initiatives:
- CrownLife ParticipACTION Challenge (over 4 million participants
annually)
- Support for the Petro-Canada 1988 Olympic Torch Relay
- The 1992 federal government funded Canada 125 program
- Community support for the Trans Canada Trail Relay 2000
- World Challenge Day (physical activity friendly challenges
internationally)
